Free Guide: Why does my toddler fight bedtime?

Have you got your copy, yet?

Why does my toddler fight bedtime?

Let me guess...

Has your baby hit the toddler stage, or maybe you're dealing with a pre-schooler? Were you told they'd be sleeping through the night by now, only to find that's not the case?

Many parents come to me for help with their toddlers and their story often involves phrases like...

1/8

I love working with toddlers, as sleep challenges are often resolved quickly at this age. By respecting their need for autonomy, connection, and play—while supporting their full range of emotions—we can make a big difference.

Are you looking for attachment focused, common sense & evidence based reassurance concerning your toddler's sleep?  Find out if I'm the sleep coach you've been looking for.

Do our parenting philosophies align?

If you are local to Melbourne bayside or the Mornington Peninsula area, why not come and meet me at the Frankston South Early Parenting drop-in group.

Free support with pregnancy/postpartum health questions, feeding, infant sleep & more.  Here I join a dedicated team of fellow volunteers, including professionals in midwifery, lactation consulting, social work, sleep consulting, massage, yoga, and sometimes even car seat safety.

Why not come and pick my brain.

Need help with extra night waking? Maybe you'd love some ideas for easing away from rocking your little one to sleep now they're getting bigger? Perhaps you'd like to see night feeds reduce a little now they've started on solids? If so...drop-in and tell me all about it.  We'd love to see you.

Tuesdays 11.30 to 2pm,

Frankston South Community and Recreation Centre

Unit 2/55 Towerhill Rd,

Frankston South

VIC 3199

All welcome

The perfect level of support if you are experiencing sleep challenges that have been the main event for a few weeks or more. Let me help you with the overwhelm by breaking down your goals into a series of smaller more achievable steps.

Ideal ...

  • if you want to move away from contact naps or rocking your toddler to sleep.  This is a healthy and normal part of parenthood, but lets face it, not always convenient.  Let me help you explore how to coax some loving changes.

  • if you would like to invite more autonomy and independence for your child at sleep time, through close connection and curiosity rather than questionable methods of sleep training that don't feel quite right to you.

  • if you find your toddler is always fighting sleep.  Are they in a permanent cycle of over-tiredness? Would you value some help in understanding your child's changing sleep needs, current stage of development and how these impact emotional needs and sensory preferences at sleep time.

  • for reducing excessive night wakes or early starts. Is you toddler confused about how sleep happens?  Do they believe you and your actions are the only way they can access or maintain sleep?  Perhaps this is your belief too?  Let me talk you through the most rewarding ways of re-writing these beliefs for everyone

  • for learning how to welcome your child's emotions without trying to silence them, distract them or condition them to disassociate from their feelings.  This is a wonderful age to begin fostering emotional awareness in our little ones & for practicing emotional availability as parents.  (Trust me...as a mother of 4 teenagers, this is the single best investment of your time while your child is small!)

Ideal if night time challenges are the main event for you and your toddler.  All the benefits of the Standard package, but ideal if you would you like me to come and witness your overnight sleep struggles, first-hand.

  • Does your toddler or pre-schooler wake multiple times during the night?

  • Are you struggling to keep them in their own bed?

  • Are you wearing a groove in your carpet walking your child back to bed several times a night?

  • Perhaps you love co-sleeping but not the endless night feeds that seem to be the expectation?

  • Is your child requesting milk feeds every hour or two?

  • Are they taking hours to resettle after they wake at night?

  • Are you feeling anxious and frustrated in your reactions and need help keeping calm in the moment?

  • Do you and your partner disagree on what approach to take?

  • Would you like someone else with experience of these troubles, to help you work out what's going on and help you create a plan that feels right for everyone?

These are just a few of the reasons why some parents opt for an overnight consultation.

Though I have every faith in my standard distance support, there are always benefits in me seeing the situation first hand, such as...

  • I can meet you & your toddler and get to know you all on a personal level

  • I can also get a good sense of family dynamics

  • On a practical level, I get to see the layout of your home and furniture, which can be helpful when deciding how to optimise sleep for parents. Different sleep arrangements can be a game changer!

  • If you're feeling anxious at the prospect of making changes I will be a calm presence to help you regulate your own energy so you can then effectively soothe and regulate your toddler's energy too.

  • Lastly, it will also provide me with the opportunity to assess your child's sleep behaviour. Snoring, mouth breathing, strange sleep positions or noises, signs of discomfort or night terror behaviour may all hold relevance to the wider situation.

How does it work?

As with the Evening visit, I would aim to arrive at your home between 30-60mins before bedtime so I can join in with your familiar pre-bed routine.  During this time you can share your questions and concerns and I can share any observations or suggestions for easing your child's wind-down.  In many cases a few small changes at bedtime can be the missing link when trying to limit disturbance to night time sleep.   If your child needs lots of help to fall asleep at bedtime, then naturally they will need increasing levels of your support to maintain sleep overnight too.  Taking the mystery out of how sleep happens and inviting your toddler to explore new possibilities for accessing sleep in their own way, with added freedom and no pressure, can be a beautiful journey of discovery for everyone.

What happens once your baby is asleep?

Once your toddler has settled off to sleep we can then chat about our objectives for the night and our plans for feeding, resettling or sleep arrangements for when they wake.  You will be in in charge at all times.  My role is to support you in sensitively unravelling the nightly challenges and in helping you to find the easiest solutions.  I will be able to share my observations on the aspects that are going well and any that may not be working to your advantage.  I can then offer various suggestions for sleep arrangements and settling insights as we work together on optimising your toddler's confidence and contentment when it comes to falling asleep and resettling with ease if disturbed in the night.

All emotions, lovingly supported. I DO NOT teach  spaced soothing, timed responses or cry it out methods. Safe co-sleeping & attachment parenting practices welcomed and supported.

All of the benefits of the above Standard package, plus an in-home visit to get things started.

Ideal if evenings and bedtimes are the most challenging time for you and your toddler and you would like me to come and witness your bedtime struggles first-hand. Together we can explore your child's well being, sleep patterns and stage of development, while creating a fun & engaging plan to build confidence and contentment at bedtime, while safeguarding secure attachment and your loving bonds of trust.  With play as the all important factor, your little one will soon be telling YOU it's bedtime, instead of the other way around!

How it works...

I will aim to arrive at your home around 30 to 60 mins prior to your toddler's bedtime so I can join in with your familiar bedtime routine.  During this time you can share your questions and concerns and I can share any observations or suggestions for easing your child's bedtime wind-down.  In my experience, most parents are doing a wonderful job already.  A few simple shifts in connection, timing, sensory activities or sleep arrangements are often all that's required to provide a blissful drift in to slumber rather than the head to head combat or endless lunacy that has become the sleep time norm for you all lately. Overnight strategies and daytime routines, also covered during my visit.

All emotions, lovingly supported. I DO NOT teach  spaced soothing, timed responses or cry it out methods. Safe co-sleeping & attachment parenting practices welcomed and supported.
